The Undead the British Library

For centuries, myths about the UNDEAD have haunted the imagination. Ressurecting the tradition of the spooky spiritualists' salon, HISTORIC PUNCH offers a Gothic soiree of cadavers, conversation, and quaffing at the BRITISH LIBRARY. Join us for a vivid nightmare before Christmas.

The evening will begin with a private tour of the TERROR & WONDER exhibition, followed by a dramatic reading of Edgar Allan Poe's THE RAVEN by comedian, actor & writer, ROBERT LLEWELLYN. Later in the evening, CARLA VALENTINE, technical curator at BARTS PATHOLOGY MUSEUM, will speak about our fixation with stopping death & the 'unchanging' protagonist in Gothic literature. The evening will end with a talk by CHRIS SKAIFE, Ravenmaster at the TOWER OF LONDON, who will entertain us with raven myth & lore!

The Ecstasy of Decay

...with Caitlin Doughty

The late Middle Ages were a time of intimate connection with death. Not just the abstract reality of death, but actual bodily decomposition. Whether it was the art of the macabre (with its dancing skeletons and worm-ridden sculpture), or the charnel houses and pauper's graves--such proximity to decay has the power to thrill the modern viewer. It is, after all, a far cry from our own sanitized death. CAITLIN DOUGHTY, founder of The Order of the Good Death & star of 'Ask a Mortician' YouTube series, will address what we can learn from our medieval brethren and discuss the cultural and personal benefits of relishing our own eventual decomposition.

Sicilian Sex Ghosts

...with Dr Paul Koudounaris

Do you like sex? Do you like Death? Do you like Sicilians? If you answered yes to any of these qustions, join author/photographer DR PAUL KOUDOUNARIS as he presents an in-depth lecture on 'The Sex Ghosts of the Palermo Catacombs', as recently featured in Fortean Times!

Over 400 years ago, the monks of Palermo's Capuchin monastery began mummifying their own brothers and prominent local citizens, and displaying their bodies in subterranean galleries. The result was one of the world's most haunted sites. But many of these ghosts were not content to simply roam the passageways, rattling chains... death had apparently not quelled their sexual appetities, and with libidoes in overdrive, they took to the streets of the city to fulfill their lecherous needs. Dr Koudounaris will explore this fascinating folklore in a uniquely bizarre lecture, illustrated with his own photographs of the mummies still preserved in Palermo.
